MAY 2009 Welcome: The regular meeting of the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club was held on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. at Providence Forge Presbyterian Church in Providence Forge. A small donation was made to support the church's youth service camp. President, Donna Gammon welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. There were 5 members in attendance. Treasurer's Report: Cathy Davis gave a Treasurer’s report. The checking account balance is $3,590.89. There is a $2,170.25 CD, and $2,028.56 in a savings account. Educational Foundation Reception: We will be providing refreshments for the Educational Foundation Reception being held on Thursd ay, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m. We need a few volunteers that can be available to help set up and serve. The menu will consist of heavy appetizers. Donna will take care of getting the food. If you can help please contact Donna. Mommy & Me Tea: Mommy & Me Tea will be held on Sunday, May 3rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m at Wallace Manor. The menu will consist of Finger Sandwiches (Donna will provide), Cookies (Cathy will provide), Fruit on skewers (still need), Tea (W endy will provide). The Craft table will need 2 teenage volunteers. If you have a teapot to lend please let Donna know. Habitat for Humanity: Mary Sparks is coordinating the volunteers for this project. The original date discussed for our group to volunteer, Saturday, May 9th, appears to have a scheduling conflict with the Habitat schedule so we also have the option of working Friday, May 15. If you are interested in helping out or for more details, please email Mary. Relay For Life: Cathy Davis is the team captain. The theme for this year's Relay will be "An Enchanted Castle" and our motto "Helping Find Happily Ever After". We are selling our "Taste of New Kent" Cookbooks with proceeds going to Relay for Life. Also we are selling $1 raffle tickets for a Taste of New Kent gift basket with the drawing to be at the conclusion of Relay. During the Relay for Life event, as another way to raise money, we will offer children's crafts=2 0with a choice of making tiaras, crowns, swords, and wands. We will offer fingernail painting and also temporary tattoos. Cathy will purchase the children's crafts. We will decorate the front of the tent to look like a castle. We would also like to have bubbles blowing in the tent so if anyone has a battery operated bubble machine to lend for the day please let Cathy know. Website: Debbie gave an update on the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club website. The website is still being worked on and Deb will notify us when the work is completed. The website address is www.nkjwc.com. R & R (Recruitment and Retention) The Woman's Club needs officers for the upcoming year. Please consider your time for these very rewarding positions. The positions must be filled to ensure we have a club next year. If you are interested in volunteering to fill a position please email Donna. Also, we are looking for suggestions from all members on ways to bring new members to our club. We are a valuable asset to New Kent County, let's not let our group disband due to lack of members. Please try to recruit a friend to bring to the next meeting. Future Events: The GFWC Conference for Virginia - Will be held on April 16-19, 2009 at the Williamsburg Marriott, 50 Kingsmill Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185
CPR Class- Being held June 6th at Providence Forge Presbyterian Church at 1:00 pm. The cost is $60. Golf Tournament - Debbie Richards checked with Chris at Royal New Kent and we are going to schedule our 3rd annual "Fore the Children" golf tournament for October 9th. Breakfast with Santa - Schedu led for December 5, 2009. Our next scheduled meeting is Monday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Wallace Manor. Welcome: The regular meeting of the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club was held on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Wallace Manor in Providence Forge. President, Donna Gammon welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. There were 7 members in attendance. Speaker: Our guest speaker was Margaret Ice, from the Heritage Public Library. She came to personally thank us for all we have done in the past and especially the last few months. She also informed us of how much they love the bags and it was discussed that the Library sell the bags to adults interested in them. Treasurer's Report: Cathy Davis gave a Treasurer’s report. The checking account balance is $3437.89. There is a $2,170.2 5 CD, and $2,028.56 in a savings account. Step for the Roses: Bonnie gave an update on the Step For the Roses program. She encouraged everyone counting their steps enter them frequently and reported that it appears the site is calculating the steps using an average versus single steps and she would like to contact them about this. Habitat for Humanity: Mary Sparks gave an update on the Habitat for Humanity project. We discussed a20date to volunteer as a group. The date selected in May 9th. Mary also asked that if you are unable to join us for the group day please volunteer individually. Habitat for Humanity is desperately in need of volunteers. Relay For Life: The Relay Kickoff - There is a kick off party scheduled for March 21st at 7:00 pm at Colonial Downs. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome. We will be selling cookbooks and ask if everyone can prepare a item from the cookbook for sampling at the event. If you are able to make an item please email Wendy what you are making so as to eliminate duplicates. Basket Raffle - An additional way to raise money for the Relay was to raffle a basket to be given away at the Relay event in May. The basket will have a bottle of New Kent Winery Wine, a couple of wine glasses and a cookbook. We will sell 1 ticket for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Wendy is to check20with Mark Mokler to see if there any restrictions on giving away alcohol at a Relay event. Cookbooks - We are attaching a sticker to the cookbooks we are selling at the event that states that we are donating a portion of the proceeds to the Relay. Lisa Burke presented the sticker designs and a design was decided on. They will be placed on the inside cover of the books. As was voted on in our last meeting, we will be donating $5.00=2 0per cookbook sold. Parks and Recreation: Mommy & Me Tea - The Tea will be held on Monday May 3rd from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Wallace Manor. The format will be the same as previous years, however, we will not do the photos this year. The Easter Egg Hunt - The Parks and Recreation Dept will be holding an Easter Egg Hunt on April 4th. This event will be sponsored by the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club because the money the Parks and Recreation is using to fund it is money we gave them from our golf tournament. Website: Debbie and Lisa gave an update on the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club website. The website address is purchased and the site is currently be built by Terri Aigner. We will be updating her with dates of events as they are scheduled. The website address is www.nkjwc.com. Wine Festival: Amy has informed us via email that the Taste of New Kent Wine Festival is on. As previously voted on we have decided to book a vendor table to sell our cookbooks. Because there is a limit of 30 vendors, Amy is going to find out for sure if we get our money back if we are not within the 30 vendors allotted. If we can get the money back then we will send the application and check in by deadline of March 16th. Catering Requests: Education Foundation - We have received a Catering Request from them to help provide light refreshments to the PTO board members from all 4 New Kent School on April 23rd at 7 pm at the NKHS. The Education Foundation is hosting this event to help promote the Giving Tree. They will also be demonstrating the new Smart Boards that have been installed in the high school and they are donating 6 to the school board. We agreed to help with this event and Donna is the contact person for this event. All those interested in helping please contact her. Historical Commission- They have asked us to provide muffins, cookies and beverages for "The True Story of Pocahontas" event being held at NKMS on April 3rd at 1:00 pm for about 200 people. Wendy and Cathy have volunteered to help at the event and are asking that we all pitch in and make muffins to provide to the event. Donations: We discussed guideline for donation requests and email voting. We will continue to entertain individual requests on a case by case basis. Any donation/service requests will need to be presented at a meeting. Any votes that require spending money over $50 will need a vote. If there are not enough people present at the meeting to make a quorum then an email vote will be emailed to all members. Email votes will have a 48 hour deadline for responses. If an email vote is not responded to within 48 hours of the email being sent the we will assume that that individual's20vote is a NO. Softball Sponsorship: It was previously mentioned that their was interest in us sponsoring a New Kent Girls Softball team. The League is a private organization and does not receive any funding from Parks and Recreation. The sponsorship fee is $300 and we will receive name recognition on back of team uniforms, recognition in all press releases, recognition at opening and closing ceremonies, custom plaque with team photo and our name on the New Kent Girls Softball league website. Cathy Davis motioned to sponsor a team and Mary Sparks seconded and the motion was carried. Future Events: Annual Spring meeting - Will be held on March 21st at Cool Springs Baptist Church. Bonnie Hunt and Donna Gammon will be attending. Cinderella Dreams Project - The Midlothian Woman's Club is collected prom dresses to be made available to those that cannot=2 0afford them. An email is being sent out to request gently used prom dresses for us to donate to this project. CPR Class- Being held June 6th at Providence Forge Presbyterian Church at 1:00 pm. The cost is $60. Golf Tournament - Debbie Richards is going to be checking with Chris Johnson at Royal New Kent to see if October 2nd or 9th is available to hold our 3rd annual "Fore the Children" golf tournament. Breakfast with Santa - Scheduled for D ecember 5, 2009. Due to the fact that our next scheduled meeting will fall during Spring Break, Donna has suggested that we meet on Sunday, April 5th at 12:30 p.m. at the Chef Jim's White House for a springtime lunch. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. JANUARY 2009 The regular meeting of the New Kent Jr. Woman's Club was held on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Wallace Manor in Providence Forge. President, Donna Gammon welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. There were 10 members in attendance. Our guest speaker was Paul Davis from the New Kent Agricultural Extension Office. He spoke to the group about what the Agricultural Extension Office is and what it does in New Kent. He also showed us a very informative slide presentation. Lastly, he spoke about the New Kent County Fair and mentioned that if anyone wants to give input on the planning of the next fair, there will be a meeting held on January 26th a t 7:00 p.m. at the county administration building. Anyone is welcome. Cathy Davis gave a Treasurer’s report. The checking account balance is $4014.24. There is a $2,170.25 CD, and $2,028.56 in a savings account. It was announced that if you have not paid your membership dues please do so. The $32.00 dues must be turned in as soon as possible . They are to be given to Cathy Davis or mailed to NKJWC, P. O. Box 83, Providence Forge, VA 23140. Donna informed the group that George Watkins Elementary has asked us to donate 300 toothbrushes for their Dental Health Curriculum. We have received donations of 134 brushes from local dentists and some NKJWC members will be asking their dentists to see if they can get some additional donations. If we are unable to secure more then we are going to order 166 more toothbrushes and they will be donated the by the 16th of January. Carrie Evelyn is our library liaison. She is still looking into the chairs we are going to purchase for the Teen Section. Amy McGinley has purchased and delivered the items the library had on their wishlist. The Winnie the Pooh party will be held at the library on Sat. January 24th at 10:30 am. The library would like us to provide refreshments. Donna and Bonnie offered to get the refreshments together and deliver them to the library. The Winnie the Pooh eve nt is also the kickoff to our "Tote Bag" give away. Carrie will be at the library that day and anyone else that can make it to the event please email me so I can let Carrie know. Also, the library asked if we would provide refreshments to an Author Reception they are hosting on February 7th from 11 am to 1 pm. Carrie will provide Donna with more information and an update/vote will be emailed shortly. Alan Bernstein is retiring as the Library Director. Donna asked the group for suggestion of a gift the NKJWC can give Alan. Bonnie motioned that we purchase a $50 gift card to Amazon.com. The motion was carried. Mary Sparks gave an update on the Habitat for Humanity house being built in New Kent. We are invited to volunteer as group or as an individual. Mary will notify us of when we may sign up when she gets the information from Donna Friend, who is the Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity. Cathy informed us that Jean Walsh will be teaching a class for CPR certification at Providence Forge Presbyterian Church on June 6th. We will sponsor the event. It is time to submit our annual reports to the Lee District General Federation of Woman's Club. The reports are due by January 25th and Donna Gammon asked for help from the group to write up the narratives explaining the events we have done over the last year that gives back to the community. Donna and&nbs p;Wendy will work on the Relay for Life, Bonnie Hunt will work on the Mommy & Me Tea, Lisa Burke will work on the Education events. Amy McGinley will write about the Library events, Cathy Davis will write about the Breakfast with Santa and Debbie Richards will write about the Golf Tournament. Please complete the narratives and email to Donna Gammon. Debbie Richards spoke about the Relay for Life and informed us the Mark Mulgar will be putting together something that will make use of our cookbooks for the event or we will donate a portion of our sales to the Relay. Also, Debbie gav e an update on the website - Debbie and Lisa will be working together to put the information together for Terri Aigner. Lastly, Debbie told the group that the Art Show set up at NKES went well and looks good. In addition to the $100 donation we made to the Art Show we have donated 2 of our tote bags and are some additional art supplies. The New Kent Wine Festival will be held on May 16th from 11 am to 6 pm. Bonnie informed the group that for us to sell our Taste of New Kent cookbooks we need to sign up for a vendor table. The cost for a table is $200 and includes a 18" x 24" sign on a 10' x 10' tent. We need to submit for the vendor table by March 16th. Bonnie is going to ask how many NKJWC members will be allowed at the vendor table. We will vote on this at20the next meeting.
